Interesting discussion - frequency response is definitely a factor, but that's more to do with recording than mastering. I'm going to start a separate thread on it in general discussion - Aidan, you HAVE to at least touch on this in your essay - The Loudness War.

you can kinda scratch with CDs too if you have decks that do it - i think it's done with a preset effect combined with a buffer on whats playing but someone can coorect me on that I'm sure - I don't know too much about how effects on CD decks work. It doesn't damage the discs though as far as I'm aware which is a big plus

Aidan and Petrolmonkey - thanks, this has been really illuminating Smile

yeah it's a digital emulation of what they think the scratching would sound like.

Vaguely off topic, but this thread made me think of the question. Is the Racecar LP mastered any differently to the CD or is it just the CD audio thrown onto an inferior format?

Seriously, how can you even imply that vinyl is in any way inferior to CD's.

Cretin.

Cretin.
Noise floor (unless you've got a laser deck)
Durability
Portability
Capacity (length of continuous playback possible without intervention)
Inability to reproduce certain types of waveform (e.g. excessive and consistent volume)
Impossible to create accurate backups

Don't get me wrong, I know vinyl has advantages over CD (analogue, frequency response) (I just bought a DVDA/SACD player for the latter), but as a format I hold my stance that it's inferior.

hehe, will do. To be honest, I expect that most audible differences will come from the mastering (and surround mixing) rather than the fact that there's extra frequencies in there, but I'm looking forward to finding out.

For the record, what I bought was one of these - I never imagined that so many formats could be played back by one device!

Well yeah to be honest I'm more interesting in hearing the surround sound mix than the 24 bit recording, I think El Cielo's an album which could really benefit from it. I've heard two surround sound remixes - Dark Side of the Moon and some Rolling Stones album.

Dark Side of the Moon was incredible, and it really suited the album, but the Rolling Stones album was such a waste of time. It just mean that there were vocals in front of your, guitars to your left, bass to your right and drums behind you. The Rolling Stones style of songwriting would work in MONO for God's sake - a stereo mix of their stuff was utterly uninspiring. But yeah, I reckon El Cielo will be more like DSOTM in that respect. Here's hoping.

So strongly that you're unable to provide any counter points to my list?
