Hey guys. Ever since the departure of Reuben I have made it my mission to aquire all songs. [removed - ric] is a site which you upload any bootlegs, b-sides, acoustics, demos etc... As long as you cannot buy the song anywhere you can legally upload/download the songs from the page. Those people who have masses of Rare Reuben tracks could upload the otherwise unavailable tracks, I will be a happy guy.
Cheers.

Yeah, bootlegs are called bootlegs because they are themselves illegal.

I'm not trying to be nasty, but do you seriously believe that? Unless you have permission from the rights holder(s) then it's illegal to upload songs.

The rights holder could be one or more of:
- the band (copyright for unsigned bands)
- the publisher (when a band is given a publishing deal, the publisher tends to own the rights to all songs, so it's illegal to release (or even record) them in any form without permission. this includes demos and bootlegs). This is why you don't see any Reuben bootlegs to download on the forum - the publishers didn't like the idea.
- the record label (if the band is signed)
- others (copyright is horribly complicated!)

I couldn't see a rules section on that blog (is it *your* blog?) But what it says about removing illegal content probably won't offer much protection should the BPI/Police etc take notice...

It's absolutely staggering how little so many people seem to understand about not just the music industry, but how the world in general works. Do you assume that when you buy a single you're only being charged for the main track, and the others are freebie give aways? If so, that's not how it works. As with pretty much any creative output which can (or could, past tense because the rights to things don't change just because you can't buy them anymore) be bought, it is owned by someone. It may have escaped your attention, but many people like to get paid for this creative output ("Piracy is piracy, if you sail the seven seas or surf the net" might ring a bell?), and are unlikely to relinquish all rights to them to enable people to freely share the songs.

Aside from all that, on the first page of that website alone I see several entries marked "Bonus Tracks", meaning they were bonus tracks on an album. The key word there being album. So they were released on an album, but they weren't really part of it, cos they were called 'bonus' tracks, so that must mean they're free too, right?

Either this is the single worst case of feigning ignorance for self defence I've ever seen, or the creators of that site don't have an iota of common sense between them. This isn't even an issue as convoluted as general filesharing - this it giving away music that doesn't belong to you but having the gall to claim that it's all legal and above board when anyone with half a brain cell can see that it's not.

On a limb here, but if enough people requested this through the publisher...and they thought there was money in it...would or could they be convinced otherwise?

All good points Ric, didn't mean to piss anyone off by the way. I only became a Reuben fan a year ago so I have found ita mission to find rarieties. Sorry.
